August 8, 2012 Book Discussion - A Call to Faith
by Archbishop Demetrios of America
In honor of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios’ centennial celebration visit to our church, the Orthodox Book Discussion Group will be reading A Call to Faith. A Call to Faith is a collection of His Eminence’s lectures and addresses. Chapters include his enthronement address (in English and Greek), classical and Christian Hellenic tradition, our Orthodox faith in contemporary America, the impact of September 11, 2001 on religious and social life, the paradox of how My Big Fat Greek Wedding projects Orthodoxy in an awkward scene of adult baptism and a hilarious wedding scene versus the true essence and mission of Orthodoxy, how Orthodoxy is conservative, rather than fundamentalist, and much more. Addresses are printed in English, some in Greek, some in both languages.
In the interest of time we will be focusing on 7 of the lectures during the discussion:
p. 9 Aspects of the Legacy of the Classical and the Christian Hellenic Tradition (as related to Orthodoxy)
