Spiritually lazy? Distracted? Frustrated? Negative? Restless? Lack faith? Inattentive? Ungrateful? Disturber of the peace? Good news: to turn these failings around, it is as simple as (or as daunting as) changing our thoughts. In Our Thoughts Determine Our Lives: The Life and Teachings of Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnika, by Ana Smiljanic, the first quarter of the book tells of the life of 20th century Elder Thaddeus (see below). The rest of the book is a collection of the Elder’s teachings, most of which have a common theme expressed in the title. Many secular psychological theories (e.g., cognitive therapy) have a similar thrust. Our thoughts become reality just as all of creation is a manifestation of Divine thought made material. God’s energy is in us but we are not aware of it. We influence others with our thoughts. If our thoughts are good, we radiate peace all around us. However, when we have ugly thoughts, we radiate negativity in our family and everywhere. There is a difference between secular theories and the teachings of Elder Thaddeus. Secular theories often have self-esteem as a goal. Elder Thaddeus’ teachings are aimed at developing humility and doing God’s will. In doing God’s will, the greatest reward is peace and joy for a Christian. The Lord will reward us with peace if, by His grace in cooperation with our will, we change our thoughts and turn toward God in whom humility reigns and peace radiates. If we wish good for ourselves and our neighbor, we must become free from thoughts of suffering insult; we must forgive from the heart. If our thoughts are kind and peaceful, everyone will feel the peace; the opposite is also true.

About Elder Thaddeus’ Life (from the Holy Cross Bookstore website):
Elder Thaddeus of Vitovnica was one of the most renowned spiritual guides of Serbia in the twentieth century. As a novice he lived in obedience to Elder Ambrose of Miljkovo Monastery, a disciple of the Optina Elders. From him Fr. Thaddeus learned the Prayer of the Heart and the selfless love that came to characterize his whole ministry to the suffering Serbian people. Born in 1914, Elder Thaddeus lived through all the suffering endured by Serbia in the twentieth century. Over the course of two World Wars, during the Communist takeover, and through the NATO bombings of 1999, he co-suffered with his people. He taught, counseled, and prayed for all who came to him in pain and sorrow. His words of love and hope provided spiritual balm for people from all classes of society. In 2002 Elder Thaddeus reposed, leaving behind a large collection of his teachings, preserved by his faithful spiritual children. His life, teachings, and spiritual conversations are here presented for the first time in English

Focus on College Students: Letters to St. Lydia and OCF Transitions

Oh, how we cherish those phone calls, texts, and emails (even if it is just an SOS call for forgetting to pack something!) How we crave to know the details of their daily experience…. We wonder about their sleep, their food, their time management, their friends, and their daily encounters with God’s tender mercies juxtaposed with temptations wrapped in deception. We pray to the Theotokos for her motherly protection and ask for the intercession of the saints to guide their steps.

In Letters to Saint Lydia, a 2010 release from Conciliar Press, we can—in some ways—live vicariously through the story of Lydia’s freshman experience at college. Lydia faces numerous challenges at college, and to top it off, she wrestles with the fact that she has chosen not to convert to Orthodoxy with the rest of her family. FOCUS ON PRAYER

We need prayer. Our families and friends need prayer. Our Church, communities, and country need prayer. The world needs prayer. Have we gotten rusty at prayer? Do we need a refresher? The following excerpts from an article on the archdiocese website can give us a jumpstart.

Prayer is praise, thanksgiving, confession, supplication and intercession to God. "When I prayed I was new," wrote a great theologian of Christian antiquity, "but when I stopped praying I became old." Prayer is the way to renewal and spiritual life. Prayer is aliveness to God. Prayer is strength, refreshment, and joy. Through the grace of God and our disciplined efforts prayer lifts us up from our isolation to a conscious, loving communion with God in which everything is experienced in a new light. Prayer becomes a personal dialogue with God, a spiritual breathing of the soul, a foretaste of the bliss of God's kingdom.
How is one to pray? Only the Holy Spirit can guide us to pray as we should. Just as a child learns to walk by walking, one can best learn to pray by praying, trusting in the help of God. Think about the meaning of every word you pray. Make it your own personal prayer. Be persistent in prayer. Do not yield to carelessness or neglect. Strengthen your prayer through a lively faith in the Lord, a spirit of forgiveness toward others, and genuine Christian living.
As we pray deeply within our hearts we grow in prayer. By the grace of God we suddenly catch a glimpse of the miracle of the presence of the Holy Spirit working within us. At first it is only a spark but later it becomes a flame freeing and energizing our whole being, provided we do nothing to grieve the Holy Spirit; and if we do sin we repent of our sin immediately and ask for God's forgiveness. To experience the fire of God's holy love, to give it space within us to do its cleansing and healing work as a breath of the Holy Spirit, and to use it as light and power for daily living -- such are the goals as well the fruits of true prayer. Living Prayer by Metropolitan Anthony Bloom. This book is so good that it is difficult to resist the urge to underline every word.

A Pocket Prayer Book for Orthodox Christians. This pocket-size book (3.5 x 5 inches) contains the standard daily personal prayers of Orthodox Christians, plus prayers for many special needs and circumstances.

Daily Prayers for Orthodox Christians contains prayers in Greek and English. Includes morning and evening prayers, the six psalms, prayers before mealtime, pre-communion and post-communion prayers, small compline, etc.

July 21, 2011 Book Discussion Group: Everywhere Present

Father Christos has selected the next title for the Book Discussion Group, Everywhere Present, a new release by Father Stephen Freeman. Early in Sunday school we learn that God is everywhere. Why is it then, that we refer to Him as “the Man upstairs?” Upstairs often means a place that we reach after death. Fr. Stephen makes a case for reorienting ourselves to the idea that the expectation of our Orthodox faith is that we experience God in the here and now. Father Stephen shows us how to apply our ancient faith in a way that will help us experience God’ s peace, mercy, and love in our daily lives. The discussion is scheduled for July 21st at 7:00 P.M. in the home of Dina and Jim Turecki, 6359 Black Walnut Court, East Amherst, NY 14051. All are encouraged and are welcome to attend. March Book Discussion Group: Soul Mending

Orthodox Book Discussion Group will hold a Special Lecture Series after Liturgies of Presantified Gifts during Lent: Soul Mending:The Art of Spiritual Direction. Join Father Christos and Father Deacon Perikles for a discussion of Soul Mending, written by Fr. John Chryssavgis. Different chapters of Soul Mending will be discussed after a pot luck dinner following each of the Liturgies of Presantified Gifts at 6:00 P.M. on Wednesdays during Lent. Soul Mending examines themes of spiritual direction and pastoral care, and the role of the spiritual director. It includes a foreword by Bishop Kallistos Ware. This is a very timely book because it deals with major themes of Great Lent, repentance and confession. Fr. John Chryssavgis is Professor of Theology at Hellenic College/Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, Brookline, Massachusetts.
The dates for the Liturgies of the Presanctified Gifts and Book Discussion are: March 9, March 16 , April 6, and April 13th.

Happy New Year from the C Library!

We have accomplished lot of things in the last year. Here are just a few noteworthy items:

We are constantly adding to our collection. The library has a wide array of Orthodox Christian media for all ages including books, DVD's, CD's, children's and young adult readers, game kits, magazines and reference material. We also have Greek language books.
Our library contains more than 3,600 items available to evey member of the Church.

Our library is expanding. We added four new bookcases to make room for our book collection.

With the help of approved funding we will be upgrading our software/internet database access.

We continue with all our programs: Story Time, children's Christmas raffle, speaker programs (in March, Anastasia Panagiotopoulou from the Archeological Institute-Greece), and the most inspirational Orthodox Book Discussion Group. This year we added a new program: Computer training. It was received with great enthusiasm.

Of course what would an online presence be on this day without our very own blog! It is our hope that HOCALibrary.blogspot.com will provide a mechanism through which folks can receive updates about the library, inspirational Orthodox Christian book reviews, Book Discussion Group information as well as other events.

Looking forward to 2011 we will continue our growing collection and offering new resources to meet your needs. Hope to be seeing you in the New Year.

Encountering Women of Faith by Kyriaki Karydoyanes Fitzgerald (editor) 'inspiring, funny, and sad,' the authors explore how the witness of prominent women saints has influenced their lives. The collection includes stories of St. Susanna, St. Elizabeth Feodoravna, the New Martyr, St. Melania the Younger, St. Olympias the Deaconess, St. Xenia of Petersburg and Fool for Christ, St. Mary Magdalene, St. Catherine, and the Myrrhbearing women told by contemporary women.

Our presenter is Popadija Victoria (Vickie) Trbuhovich, St. Stephens Serbian Orthodox Church, Lackawanna, NY. Popadija is the the Serbian word for presbytera. Popadija Vickie is a member of St. Catherine's Vision, an organization of Orthodox women in North America who received graduate degrees in Orthodox theology, primarily from Holy Cross Orthodox School of Theology or St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary. Members of St. Catherine's Vision serve as editor and contributors of the book.

A collaboration of Church ministries has a special evening planned for all parishioners. On November 5th the Orthodox Book Discussion Group will host presenter Nick Marinides, who will discuss The Desert Fathers: Sayings of the Early Christian Monks by Benedicta Ward. The Desert Fathers were the first Christian monks who lived in the 3rd century deserts of Egypt, Palestine, and Syria. They lived lives of celibacy, fasting, prayer, and poverty. Their Sayings (spiritual advice, stories, parables, and reflections on life) extend our understanding of the gospels as God reveals His mysteries through the Church. The book is organized into themes: Charity, Fortitude, Lust, Patience, Prayer, Self-control. Benedicta Ward a theology faculty at Oxford University. The book may be purchased at a discounted price in the church’s Orthodox Bookstore/Giftshop.
Nick Marinides is a parishioner who is a doctoral candidate in Byzantine history at Princeton University. Meet in the parlor at 6:30 on November 5.

August 2010 Book Discussion Group: Facing East: a Pilgrim's Journey into the Mysteries of Orthodoxy

What a wonderful evening we had discussing Beauty for Ashes in June. Thank you so much to Dr. Frye for his captivating presentation. We had one of the largest groups that we have had in quite a while and the response has been enthusiastic.

Father has recommended the title for the August 26th Book Discussion Group, Facing East: A Pilgrim's Journey into the Mysteries of Orthodoxy, by Frederica Mathewes-Green. Here is what Publishers Weekly says about the book:

"The homespun mingles with the majestic in this affectionate account of a family’s romance with an ancient form of Christianity. The author, a columnist for the Religion News Service, was a lapsed Roman Catholic who tried Hinduism before becoming a charismatic Episcopalian; her husband, Fr. Gregory, pastor of the Holy Cross Mission in Baltimore, is a former Episcopal priest. Homeschoolers who believed the Episcopal Church was “repealing the creed and condoning immorality,” the couple has joined a contingent of evangelical Christians who have, in recent years, been converting to Eastern Orthodoxy. Mathewes-Green offers an intimate glimpse of this piece of the contemporary American religious landscape. Writing with charm and humor and a convert’s zeal, she weaves reflections on family life, friendship and personal spirituality with descriptions of Orthodox worship and fellowship."

The author's descriptions of the "why's" behind all the rituals of Divine Liturgy and the sacraments are very interesting. She presents the information in such an easy style. Some may have difficulty with what may be viewed as her irreverent tone in spots, However, in looking beyond, the reader cannot help be inspired by Mathewes-Green's commitment to Orthodoxy.

Make Time for Spiritual Reading? You Have Got to be Kidding!!!

Time, the precious quantity. When you think about it, most of the ascetic practices encouraged by our Orthodox faith require time: prayer, attendance at Divine Liturgy, partaking of the sacraments, works of mercy, daily scripture reading, fasting, etc. These practices help us know God’s love. While knowing God’s love is the ultimate experience of heaven on earth, our busy lives pose a challenge to tapping into to the treasures Orthodoxy holds.
Spiritual reading is one of the ascetic practices that helps us know God’s love. It also requires time. How is it possible to make time? Some think that in order to read a spiritual book, hours of time must be carved out on a regular basis, to ever have the hope of finishing a book. For many, carving out hours of time simply will not work due to time demands of current obligations.
An alternative is the busy mom, busy senior, busy executive, or busy laborer strategy. Name it what you like. This strategy carves out snippets of time on a daily basis by taking advantage of having to wait:

1. Waiting in line at the bank
2. Waiting to pick up children at school
3. Waiting in a doctor’s, dentist, veterinarian office
4. Waiting for a customer to arrive for an appointment
5. Waiting for a plane, train, bus to arrive at a destination
6. Waiting for a plane, train, or bus to depart
7. Waiting for a relative or friend who is chronically late, or chronically slow
8. Waiting for a slow computer to boot up or print-out
9. Waiting for meetings to start
10. Waiting for delays in the start of appointments with the plumber, electrician, painter, furnace technician, etc.
11. Waiting for the last step of a recipe to finish, in order to proceed to the next.
12. Waiting in the grocery store line
13. Waiting for a hair appointment
14. Waiting for a car repair
15. Can you think of other examples?

If you use these wait times to read a few pages of a book, it adds up! Add these wait times to time it takes to read a couple of pages every night before going to sleep and you have completed a book! To find the most wait time possible, always have your book with you. Unexpected delays turn into a treasured time to read.
Some say that if they do not read within large blocks of time, they cannot remember their train of thought. To overcome this difficulty, they might consider writing notes on a sticky or in the margin of the page. The effort is worth it. Humble attempts at reading turn into highly valued time spent on a daily basis. You cultivate the love of reading, which in turn provides the energy to persevere.
The Church’s Orthodox Library stocks a wonderful variety of discounted spiritual books. Topics range from parenting, the saints, anger, depression, the Theotokos, Orthodoxy, spirituality, prayer, marriage, confession, to childrens’ stories. Beauty for Ashes: The Spiritual Transformation of a Modern Greek Community

This story of profound spiritual transformation demonstrates how a bishop and a local monastery turned a village riddled by scandal into one of the most spiritually vibrant towns in all of Greece. The book covers the political history and religious character of the region of Nikopolis, from time of the Apostle Paul in 63 AD to the arrival of Bishop Meletios in 1980.

With great sensitivity, the author deals with the issue of scandal within the church, the restoration of the local church to spiritual health, and the renewed trust between church leaders and the laity. He focuses on the actions of the local monastic community and their leader, Bishop Meletios, who applied his ancient faith in a modern context to bring about social and religious change. Stephen R. Lloyd-Moffett is an Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at California Polytechnic State University. His professional research centers on ascetic traditions.

Excerpt: As an institution, the Church cannot overcome the inertia of moral decline, subjectivism, and hedonism in our society. As an institution, the Church can never train all the priests to be educated, holy vessels of God. As an institution, the Church will not preserve the Truth of God and the purity of His altar unblemished. If the Church was only a human institution, despair would be entirely justified. Bishop Meletios wants to remind people that, fortunately, the Church is not merely a human institution.

Yet as easily as the people noted Bishop Meletios’ personal strictness, they also noted his compassion. The Library presents a lecture on "War Memorials of Modern Times in Peloponnisos" with archaeologist, Anastasia Panagiotopoulou, Director of the Archaeological Institute of Peloponnesian Studies. Anastasia Panagiotopoulou is a Greek archaeologist who works in Sparta. She studied in Athens and Paris, and has published numerous articles on topics ranging from early Mycenaean temple sites to the mosaic art of Late Antiquity and Early Christian era. Recently, she collaborated with Dr. Mary Voyatzis ( University of Arizona) and Dr. David Romano (University of Pennsylvania) on the excavation of the site of Mt.Lykaion in Arcadia

As we come to the end of 2009 we like to review some noteworthy items:

With the provided Church budget and donor funds, we have increased our collection of: Juvenile, Young adult, and Adult non fiction
Juvenile, Young adult and Adult fiction
Reference books; Greek Language books; Magazines
Non book media—CD’s and DVD’s

Our library has a presence on the Church website and a Blog (HOCALibrary.blogspot.com) for up to date news, announcements and book reviews.

Our special programs included author/ speaker Theo Halo and a screening of The Journey, The Greek American Dream by Maria Iliou.

We had a library open house to celebrate our 14th year as a church library.

In October, we hosted the Church and Synagogue Library Association of Western NY Chapter Fall meeting. CSLA provides inspiration and guidance to establishing and maintaining church libraries.

This month we have the Children’s Christmas Raffle inviting children to check out a book and enter the raffle. It was a hit last year!

We continue our on going projects:
· Story Time, introducing children to new books.
· The Book Discussion Group continues to be a good spiritual gathering once a month.
· Check out our colorful bulletin board with book suggestions.
· We deliver books to elderly shut-ins. (if you know someone needing this service , please let us know.)
· We also have established “Friends of the Library” volunteers to assist us with inventory and special programs.

Our goals for the coming year are to update our computer technology, make our library catalog available online and continue increasing our library collection.

Many thanks to our library Staff and our very talented story time volunteers.

Looking forward to 2010 we will continue to offer new resources to meet your needs . We always welcome suggestions and comments about how we can improve our collection and our library ministry.

From the Preface:

Papa Dimitri lived in Greece during the Communist struggle after WWII. His life is was marked by many miracles. Allow us to introduce to you such a hero, a champion, a contemporary Saint who reposed in the Lord in 1975: Father Dimitrios Gagastathis--A giant of a Saint; a towering, prophetic figure; a simple man of great faith; a man of prayer, whose feet were touching the earth, but whose head reached the heavens. Father Dimitrios, or "Papa-Dimitri" as he was known, lived amidst the problems and cares of everyday life as a married priest (with nine daughters), yet "lived like an angel rather than an earthly man." He became for us a lamp, a living icon who " walked among us but whose association was in heaven."

The Book Discussion Group will be held at 6:30 p.m. February 10th in the Church parlor. Guest presenter will be Dr. Pat Christian. All are welcome. Don't miss this opportunity for spiritual nourishment! The book is currently available in the Church library and bookstore.

With the provided Church budget and donor funds, we have increased our collection of: Juvenile, Young adult, and Adult non fiction, Juvenile, Young adult and Adult Fiction Reference books, Greek Language books, Magazines, Non book media --CD's and DVD's .We have repaired our two ailing computers. A generous parishioner donated funds for a new copy machine and a beautiful stand,The Library has a presence on the Church web site and a BLOG ( Hocalibrary.blogspot.com) for up to date news, announcements and book reviews.This summer we provided a "VACATION KIT " for those families taking trips: Hand picked books appropriate for the ages of the children, Bible quizzes and riddles. Also we included a family read together book. Our special programs in the Fall included the film screening of Trojan Women and Antigone with an introduction by Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature, Kalliopi Nikolopoulou.We held a Library Open House in October ( library awareness day). We established Friends of the Library Volunteer Group. In December we held a Children's Christmas Raffle inviting children to check out a book and enter the raffle.

Biblical scholars can readily parallel the futility of pleasurable pursuits as portrayed in Ecclesiastes with the varied ways that happiness is sought in today's culture. Abraham Twerski and the biblical writer arrive at the same conclusion: true hapiness is impossible without a spiritual component. Twerski calls the absence of that component "Spiritual Deficiency Syndrome," best typified by chronic discontent. His background as a rabbi and later as a medical doctor provides ample illustrations.Twerski differentiates spirituality from religion, suggesting that "to be spiritual is to be the best we can be...exercising the traits and qualities...unique to humankind." The eleven abilities that form the bases for chapters include abilities to be self-aware, to be humble, to choose, to be patient , to make the most of circumstances, to improve, to be compassionate, to have perspective, to have purpose, to search for truth, and to change. In the chapter on making the most of circumstances, Twerski emphasizes being our best "at any given time."He says that the acceptance of limitations, particularly among the elderly, is a recognition that while we may not be able to do what we once did, we can still be the best we can be in out current season of life. The final section provides ten steps to be practiced, each on an "I" statement. The final one is a reminder that spiritual growth is a never-ending process. Stories abound in this highly readable text, and one finds humor, reality, and encouragement. Recommended for church, synagogue, and other libraries, as the text speaks to persons of all faiths as well as to those who claim no creed.

It is the story of a contemporary nun (1897-1992) who found her calling among the needy in Thessaloniki, Athens, England, India and other countries. Characterized by a quick and lively wit and an eagerness to help others, Mother Gavrilia had a remarkable gift for understanding those who came to her for guidance. The biography is a "quick-read" - about 150 pages. Following this, the second half of the book is a revelation of Mother Gavrilia's wisdom revealed in a question-answer style. The correct order of things is that man is unified with God. But, because of the Fall, man finds himself in a world full of sorrow. The justice of God is to redeem man to be unified with Himself. But, how can man accomplish this? Is there a spiritual road map that is designed to help us navigate through the complex and confusing world in which we live?

In the sixth century, a monk named John (St. John Climacus or St. John the Ladder), living in the Egyptian desert, wrote a book outlining the stages of spiritual life. He based his entire work on the image of a ladder of thirty rungs, stretching from earth heaven. Each rung described a step in the pursuit of virtue and spiritual life. While the rungs of the ladder suggest a potential map towards unification with God, the author clarifies:

"The message is clear: In order to ascend to heaven, it is necessary for us to fix our eyes on Jesus.... We will never make it to God if we fix our eyes on the method, on the rungs of the ladder. This will only lead us to despair, and/or rigid legalism which will rob us of our joy."

In keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, we can experience His love, compassion, mercy, and forgiveness. This is our source of strength as we ascend the ladder, as we pick up our crosses and follow Him.

In a very real sense, this book tells it like it is, in kind of a tough love manner. While some of the realities that the book reveal are difficult to accept, the reader takes comfort in the security of knowing that what is being revealed is the joyous Truth.

Ascending the Heights is a highly recommended lenten reading.

Our next Book Discussion Group meeting will take place on: Wednesday, March 26 following the Liturgy of the Pre-sanctified Gifts in the Church parlor. We will be discussing St. Nektarios-A Saint of Our Times by Sotos Chrondropoulos. Above all, this is a book about hope, especially during modern day trials and tribulations. We accomplished a lot of things in the past year. Here are just a few noteworthy items:

* We developed a bi-monthly book discussion group.
* We had a wonderful and informative special events program with Fr. Anthony Salzman speaking on Byzantine Iconography as well as a presentation for our Seniors on Nutrition by Dr. Tina Colaizzo-Anas .
* We are happy to announce that The Rivendell School is now using our library.
* We continue with our successful Story Time program for children after Divine Liturgy once a month.
* We developed our web site HOCAlibrary.blogspot.com

Looking forward to 2008, we hope to update our equipment by purchasing a scanner , barcoding our books, and continuing to offer new resources to meet your needs. Imagine growing up in early 20th century Russia in a noble family. As an adult, you join the ranks of the intelligentsia as a noted poet and scholar. But, revolution is in the air, one million Russians are exiled to Europe, and you are one of those who take up residence in France. While Europe was in no position to absorb 1 million refugees, France was more welcoming. Still, many Russians in France remained homeless, poor, and hungry. Mother Maria, a twice divorced mother of three children who lost two of her children to devastating illnesses, was one of the Russian refugees in France. By the grace of God, she became an Orthodox nun serving the poorest of the Russian diaspora. Eventually, because of her support of the Jews, she died a martyr's death in one of Hitler's concentration camps. This impressive biography of Mother Maria encourages readers to live as she lived. She "established a code of practice" that was based on "a recognition of the dignity of [all men] created in the image and likeness of God." To understand this, one can "perceive that this divine image [can be] veiled, distorted and disfigured ..."
